During our bracelets project we had some scrap pieces of material that Ben shaped into pendants. Heidi carved some hearts in some and then decided to burn some elephants in others. These were handed out to the kids at the learning festival in May.
Since the wood was really rough for burning, Heidi outlined the shape with a carving knife so the tool could follow the line a little better and not get hung up in the texture of the oak. This proved to be helpful in keeping the burning even along the outline.
When shading, its similar to shading with a pencil. And if you mess up, there is always sandpaper to clean it off.
